MAHER BACKED FOR ARSENAL

The AZ Alkmaar manager Gertjan Verbeek has said that the 19-year-old youngster of the club, Adam Maher, should join Arsenal after interest from the Premier league club in recent weeks. Adam Maher is regarded as one of the promising young prospects within the AZ Alkmaar squad. Hence, it is surprising for me to know that his own manager is willing to offer him to another club. Even though Verbeek has said that a move to Arsenal will be the best possible move for his career, he has said that Maher should spend the rest of the season with the Dutch club before moving in the summer.

Verbeek has recalled how the Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has been able to nurture several young talents over the years. Players like Cesc Fabregas, Robin van Persie, and Samir Nasri arrived at the club with little more than talent, but they have been able to become world-class players under the management of Wenger. The 19-year-old midfielder is regarded as the next Patrick Vieira due to his physical build and style of play. Maher has been extremely good for AZ this season. He has managed to score five goals for the club in all competitions, and he has stated several times that he would like to play for a big club.

“I think Arsenal would be a good environment for him. Under Arsene Wenger, these young talents have often improved. I think he [Maher] is very good and can grow there a bit like Robin van Persie,” said the AZ Alkmaar manager in response to the transfer speculation surrounding his 19-year-old starlet. It has been a difficult season for AZ as they have struggled to maintain consistency on a regular basis. They are currently in the ninth position after a run of good results in recent weeks.

AZ NEED TITLE

The AZ Alkmaar manager Gertjan Verbeek has said that his side must win the KNVB Beker title in order to have any chance of qualification to the Europa league next season. AZ Alkmaar are one of the teams looking to qualify for the European places this season, but their poor run of form in recent weeks means that they are unlikely to finish in the top five positions in the Dutch Eredivisie. They are currently 12th in the league table after a poor run of form that includes just two victories in the last five matches. Hence, they are unlikely to make it into the Europa league through the league positions, thus leaving them with the only option of qualifying for this competition by winning the KNVB Beker.

They will be playing against the second division club Dordrecht hoping to book their place in the last eight of the competition. Verbeek has raised the stakes ahead of the match by confirming that he will be naming a strong line-up for this match in the hope of progressing to the next round. The manager will have the presence of Donny Gorter in the first team after he has sufficiently recovered from his injury, but it is highly likely that Giliano Wijnaldum will be the starter.

“We want to be fighting for a place in Europe this season. This is from the league position, but this is now very difficult because we have lost a lot of points. Performing well in the cup would take the pressure away. That’s the pressure that we as a club have imposed on ourselves. The pressure of the players who want to perform and repeat what we did last season,” said the manager. After this match, they will be playing against FC Twente at home in another tough match.
